Black History Spotlight

Charles Richard Patterson and sons were the first and only black automobile company in history.

Born enslaved in virginia in 1833, c.r. Patterson escaped, traveling over the allegheny mountains, through west virginia and across the ohio river. He settled in greenfield, ohio, a station on the underground railroad.

Patterson learned blacksmithing skills and went to work for a carriage-making business. In 1873, he formed a business partnership with another local carriage manufacturer, j.p. Lowe. For the next 20 years, the duo ran a successful business making expertly crafted horse-drawn carriages.

In 1893, patterson bought out lowe and became the sole proprietor and renamed the company c.r. Patterson & sons. When he died in 1910, his son frederick took over the business. Frederick was already a pioneer, becoming the first black man to play football for ohio state university. Frederick knew that automobiles were the future. C.r. Patterson & sons produced its first car in 1915. Known as the patterson-greenfield automobile, it sold for $850. The patterson-greenfield model was comparable to the ford model t, even though the ohio company couldn’t match ford’s manufacturing capabilities.

In the 1920s, after producing approximately 150 cars, patterson & sons switched to the production of trucks, buses and other commercial vehicles. Hit hard by jim crow and then the great depression in 1932, the company began to spiral downward. It closed in 1939. There are no known patterson-greenfield automobiles in existence today, but several c.r. Patterson & sons company carriages have survived. The national museum of african american history & culture states that patterson & sons remains the only black-owned automobile company in united states history.

In honor of the super bowl. Frederick douglass "fritz" pollard (january 27, 1894 – may 11, 1986) was an american professional football player and coach. In 1921, he became the first african-american head coach in the national football league (nfl). Pollard and bobby marshall were the first two african-american players in the nfl in 1920. Football pioneer walter camp called pollard "one of the greatest runners these eyes have ever seen."

A Happy New Year

For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. (Rom. 10:13)

Today people everywhere are gathering together to celebrate the first bright moments of the New Year.

Yet, for thousands of others, this day will be the toughest 24 hours of their lives. For those people, New Year’s will serve only as a dim reminder of loneliness and loss. It will simply mark the beginning of another year of failure.

What about you? What’s this year really going to be like for you?

You may appear to be happy enough. You may be passing out seasonal smiles and holiday greetings just like everybody else. But inside, you may hurt. You may be disappointed. You may even feel like you can’t go on.

You Can Start Over!

If so, I want you to know something. All of that can change in an instant. You can start your life over today and make this New Year’s Day the most joyful day of your life!

How many times have you said to yourself, If I could just start over, I’d do it all differently? That doesn’t have to be simply an idle wish. Jesus Christ has actually made it possible. That’s His Christmas present to you. He paid the price for all your sins. He paid the penalty for all your mistakes.

That’s the reason He came to earth. That’s the reason He was born – so you could start over!

You may look at your life and say, “But I’ve made some terrible mistakes. I’ve done some despicable things.” That doesn’t matter. Jesus paid the price for them all!

How can you make a new start? Romans 10:9 says that “if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” It’s as easy as saying, “Jesus, I’m turning my life over to You. From this day forward I’m Yours.”

What better time to turn your life around than on this first day of the New Year. Right now, wherever you are, just give your life to Jesus. Then jump up and down and holler, “Praise God, I’m starting all over!”

And then find out what it really means to have a Happy New Year!

The True Meaning of Christmas

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

(Isa. 9:6)

When Jesus came to earth, it really was a moment when God Almighty shed His glorious appearance and exchanged it for the clothing of human flesh. For the sake of our redemption, God laid aside all of His radiant glory, took upon Himself human flesh, and was manifested in the very likeness of a human being.

Jesus our King exchanged His royal robes for the clothing of flesh. Just think of it — Almighty God, clothed in radiant glory from eternity past, came to this earth formed as a human being in the womb of a human mother. And He did it for this purpose: so that He could one day die a miserable death on the Cross to purchase our salvation.

All of this required humility on a level far beyond anything we could ever comprehend or anything that has ever been requested of any of us. Yet this was the reason Jesus came. It was His purpose from the beginning. Therefore, to fulfill God’s plan and purpose, He chose to be obedient to the very end, humbling Himself to the point of dying a humiliating death on the Cross and thereby purchasing our eternal salvation.

As you celebrate Christmas this year with your family and with the family of God, be sure to remember the real purpose of Christmas. Remind others of the reason God appeared to mankind, veiled in human flesh in that lowly manger in Bethlehem. That baby was God manifested in the flesh, born to die for you and for me. Had He not come, you and I and the whole world would be lost in sin. But Jesus was so willing to do whatever was required to redeem us from Satan and sin that He humbled Himself even unto death on the Cross. This is the true meaning of Christmas!

Thanksgiving—The Key to Peace

Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. (Phil. 4:6 KJV)

The first thing you need to do before you do anything this holiday season is make your petitions to God and give Him thanks. Many times, when I get involved in thanking God, I don’t even think about my request. Thanking God reminds me that He has already handled it.

One day, before I began praying, I started thanking God. I said, Father, I want to thank you for my life. I am alive. I can stand up and walk. I thank you that I can hear and speak. Thank you for this holiday to remember your blessings upon this country. Thank you for my wife and children, and a house for us to live in. Thank you for giving me a job that I love. You gave me a congregation to pastor. Thank you for people to work and serve with me in the ministry. I went on and on….

Thankful And Content

By the time I finished, I forgot what my petition was. God has been good to me, and He has been good to you, and you are to give Him thanks in whatever state you are. There are people who would love to have what you have. Thanksgiving is the key to peace. People lose peace because they are looking at what other people have. “They have this, so I have to have it.” But when you are thankful for what you have, you and your house will live in the peace of God.

In Acts 16 we find Paul and Silas singing praises to God in jail at the midnight hour. You may be in the midnight hour in your life. If so, then you ought to give God thanks. Even in the midnight hour there is a light from heaven that shines like the noonday sun.

Thank God For Victory

Even in the midnight hour, the power of God is manifested. Regardless to how dark the problem is, God is bigger, stronger, and wiser. You ought to give Him thanks that even in the midnight hour, victory is yours. Give God thanks because you have the victory. A lot may be going on in the world today, but let’s be sure to thank God regardless of what we know or don’t know. It may not look like it but give Him thanks anyway. It may not sound like it but give Him thanks anyway. Everybody may be saying that you are losing but give Him thanks anyway.

God gives you victory everywhere you go. Victory is your middle name. He is with you even to the end of the world. Thank God for victory.

The Greatest Enemy of Faith (Part I)

The greatest enemy of faith, the most subtle and the most devastating, is the lack of knowledge of the Word of God. To believe the devil’s lie that, “It is God that is putting you through trials and tests” will neutralize your faith. Through religious tradition Satan has blinded the minds of Christians to what the Word says. Jesus said, “SATAN HATH DESIRED TO…SIFT YOU.”

James 1:2 says,”…count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations.” Notice, he said, “when you fall into temptations,” not when you walk into them with your eyes open. Some folks walked into them with their eyes wide open! This verse is often misquoted as, “The trying of your faith perfects it.” But the Word says, “The trying of your faith works patience.”

Patience is a spiritual force that will support your faith like a pier under a bridge. Satan tries that which you call “faith” to see if it is true faith, or if it is mental assent. The force of patience will undergird your faith and cause you to be constant – holding the same confession through the trial Satan brought.

Satan is Out to Destroy Your Faith

Peter said, “… think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings…” (I Pet. 4:12-13) No, it’s not strange that these things happen. Satan is not out to perfect your faith. If the trying of your faith perfected it, we would all have it made. Our faith would be perfect. I don’t know anyone who hasn’t had plenty of trials or tests!

I’ll admit that if you win out with your faith, you will be stronger. If you’ll put your faith into action through the Word, you will come out with a determination to not let Satan win another battle. But that is not what Satan designed it to do. He designed the trial to put you under, not over. Trials are a design of Satan. If you believe that God sends trials, that is a devastating blow to your faith. If God is doing it, certainly you don’t want to resist God. For instance, in the area of sickness, if it’s God’s will for you to be sick, why go to a doctor and try to get out of God’s will?

It is God’s will that you be well. “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.” (III John 2) God wants you healed, and He will go any way you choose: through doctors, through the Word, or both. But, if you fall for Satan’s lie, your faith is in neutral. You cannot use your faith to get rid of something you believe God gave you. Satan is not the finisher of your faith, and if trials and tests perfected faith, Satan would be the finisher of it. Hebrews 12:2 declares that Jesus is the author and finisher of your faith .

Obedience To God's WORD

Luke 5:4-7. (NKJV)

When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, "Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch." But Simon answered and said to Him, "Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net." And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking. So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink.

Jesus had told Simon Peter to let down his nets, so Peter let down a single net. Peter’s response was a lot like some of ours. We don’t want to doubt the Word of God, but we do not really believe it either. So, we let down a single net when God has told us to let down all of our nets. Then we wonder why we have trouble receiving the full blessings of God.

Our heavenly Father wants to bless us exceedingly and abundantly above all we could ask or even think. But, if we are not obedient to do His Word, then we will not be prepared to receive all that He has for us. It is truly an awesome thought to know that you actually control God’s ability to bless you by your obedience to His Word.

I will remember the Lord my God, for it is He who gives me power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant in the earth.

This is why I am a cheerful giver and it is given to me to the point of overflowing! Because I invest bountifully I receive bountifully and I have abundance to give for every good work!

So Father, according to Your Word this is my investment in the kingdom of God, therefore angels go now and bring in my return on my investment .

Increase, promotions, wealth and riches for I call those that be not as though they were, therefore I call myself a millionaire! I am a millionaire for this is my confession of faith.

The Wisdom of Love

It would be difficult to deny the importance of love in the Christian Walk. We talk about love, and we can rejoice in the love of God that motivated God to send His only Son to redeem us from the powers of darkness, save us from sin and heal us from sickness. And, according to Jesus, the world will know we follow Christ by our love. It is love that draws people to repent. It is love that is missing in their lives, not theology and doctrine. Paul said in Romans 5:5 that the love of God has been shed abroad (poured into our hearts) through the Holy Spirit. My observation has been that the challenge of love is allowing it to pour out to others; particularly those who have “done you wrong.” Lest you think I am preaching at you; I will admit that I myself have had challenges! Before I share my personal experiences, let’s look at the scriptures and allow them to speak for themselves:

"To sum up, you should all be of one mind living like brothers with true love and sympathy for each other, generous and courteous at all times. Never pay back a bad turn with a bad turn or an insult with another insult, but on the contrary pay back with good. For this is your calling—to do good and one day to inherit all the goodness of God. For: He who would love life and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips from speaking guile: let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it."
(1 Peter 3:8-11 Phillips)

"For the Scriptures tell us: Whoever wants to embrace true life and find beauty in each day must stop speaking evil, hurtful words and never deceive in what they say. Always turn from what is wrong and cultivate what is good; eagerly pursue peace in every relationship, making it your prize."
(1 Peter 3:10-11 TPT)

Now I don’t know about you, but I want to find beauty in each day and live a good life. I prefer this type of day over a “bad day.” The amazing thing is…we are in control of which day we have by what we say, the tone of our voice, and how we behave toward others. Several years ago, I had a specific illustration in my life that showed me just how quickly speaking unkindly of others affects me. I remember it vividly, sitting in a restaurant after a church service talking to a friend and eating a late-night breakfast. We talked about many subjects and then I began to “share” about a situation in my life where I felt someone had “done me wrong” or behaved in a way that was hurtful to me. (Please note that “sharing” is speaking words.) As I began to talk about the problems, they were causing me and how they “should” have behaved, I believed my judgment of them was justified. However, before we left the restaurant, I developed a sore throat and symptoms of a respiratory infection. I got the message and repented! Now God did not do that to me, I did it to myself by opening the door to strife instead of keeping that door shut!

Now, you may think that was a coincidence, but over the years I have seen the pattern. Speaking ill of others, being judgmental, and not walking in love towards others is bad for my health. And yours too! Now talking about someone is different than having a conversation with someone to work out a disagreement. You can talk about someone all you want as long as the one you are addressing is God! He is the best Counselor and will not only guide you in your relationships but correct you and get you back on the right path. Having a conversation with someone to restore relationship may be a good idea, if you have (1) asked for wisdom (2) asked for guidance and timing (3) examined the motivation of your own heart. (If your intent is to prove you are right and they are wrong, you will only make the situation worse.)

Success is a Decision

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. - Joshua 1:8 NKJV

Success begins with a decision to succeed. In turn, that decision will produce an unwavering commitment to do what it takes to do two things.

The first is to discover the spiritual laws relevant to your challenge. Simply put, this means to get wisdom: “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom” (Proverbs 4:7 NKJV). The second is to diligently apply these laws and wisdom through to complete victory.

God’s will for you is success, but success doesn’t just happen. That’s why He shows you in His Word how to make things happen.

If you do not believe and act according to His Word, there is nothing He can do about it. However, when you do your part, He has to do His part. I like to say it this way: We get to do the easy part and God gets to do the impossible part.

For example, the Bible says, “Whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant” (Matthew 20:26 NKJV). In other words, you can’t promote yourself; only God can make it happen. But you can make the decision to succeed by getting wisdom and then acting on the Word by choosing to become a servant.

When you make the decision to apply the Word of God to your situation, God promises that you will make your way prosperous and have good success.

Confession:
I make the decision to succeed today. I make an unwavering commitment to do what it takes to get wisdom concerning the spiritual laws relevant to my challenge, and then to apply them through to complete victory.

The Father’s Heart

"But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him" (Luke 15:20) How much love do you have for sinners?

That may sound like a strange question, but it's one I want you to think about today. All too often, once we get saved and get our lives cleaned up a little bit, we lose our compassion for those who are still lost. We look at the drunk stumbling down the street or the guy at the office who lies to the boss and tells dirty jokes and turn up our spiritual noses.

But if we ever truly understood the heart of our Heavenly Father, we'd never do that again. Jesus told a story that can give us a glimpse of that heart. It's the story we call the prodigal son. You've probably heard it many times, how the son rebelled and dishonored his father, and how the father, in spite of it all, received him home with joy when he repented. But there's one phrase in it I want to draw your attention to today. It's this one: "But when the prodigal son was yet a great way off, his father saw him.

That phrase gives such a moving glimpse of the heart of that loving father. It tells us that even before his boy had repented, even during those long days when he was up to his eyebrows in sin, that father was watching for him, longing for him to come home. Every morning he scanned the horizon, hoping to see the silhouette of his returning son. And the last thing every night, he'd look again...straining his eyes in hope. His son was constantly on his mind, and his heart was always full of love for him. The kind of gut-wrenching love that, on the day his son came home, drove that father to run to him and kiss him.

That's the kind of heart our Heavenly Father has for those who are lost. It's the kind of heart He had for you while you were still wandering in the world. It's the kind of heart that embraced you with open arms even when you were still covered with the grime of sin. There's a whole world full of weary people out there who haven't yet found that embrace. They're more than just "sinners," they're our potential brothers...lost ones in desperate need of a loving Heavenly Father. God forbid we should ever turn up our noses at them. May He help us instead to start bringing them home.

A Godly Woman Shall Be Praised

Scripture:

Her children stand and bless her. Her husband praises her: “There are many virtuous and capable women in the world, but you surpass them all!” Charm is deceptive, and beauty does not last; but a woman who fears the Lord will be greatly praised. (Proverbs 31:28-30 NLT)

Devotion:

With Mother’s Day just past, let’s take a look at what the Bible says about wives and mothers. Today’s scripture is a small portion of Proverbs 31, which has long been considered the “godly woman chapter” in the Bible.

Reading through the whole chapter might make the job of a godly woman seem overwhelming. This lady is perfect—Who can live up to such an ideal? She is wise, kind, virtuous, capable, trustworthy, loving, giving, helpful, encouraging, energetic, a doer of good deeds, and gets up before dawn, working far into the night to take care of her household and business.

While these are all wonderful attributes for wives and moms (and the rest of us) to attain, thank God for the encouraging words at the end of this chapter as shown in the scripture above. The real key is to “fear the Lord” — to honor and hold Him in reverence. When you put Christ first and He becomes the “Author and Finisher of your faith” and the center of everything you do, you will have all the faith, strength, creativity, wisdom and energy you need to be the woman God created you to be. The Lord will honor you — and so will your husband, children, extended family, friends and everyone you meet!

Prayer:

Lord, I thank you for godly women everywhere—wives, moms, grandmothers, daughters, aunts, nieces and friends. Bless these hard-working, compassionate and devoted ladies to care for their families and other responsibilities with faithfulness, love and wisdom according to Your Word. Grant them the desires of their heart as they trust in You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

He is Risen!

Christianity is one of the most practiced religions, but is it truly a religion? Christianity is based on the death, burial, but most importantly the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Son of the Most High God. According to 1 Corinthians 15:14, “…If Christ is not risen, then our teaching is empty, and your faith is also empty.” Without the resurrection of Jesus Christ, Christianity would not exist.

The resurrection is not a “day,” it is a Man who took the victory over death and gave His life for humanity. As Believers we understand that Easter has been turned into a pagan holiday, full of colorful eggs, chocolate-covered candies and the Easter Bunny. The real celebration is the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, which is the capstone of Christianity. Christians often lose sight of the importance of the biblical truth behind this highly profitable and marketed holiday.

As Christians we should use this time to celebrate our Risen Lord. According to the scriptures, Jesus died for our sins, was buried and rose again early on the morning of the third day. The scriptures fulfill the prophecy of this glorious event, but revelation unleashes the power that breaks down traditional misconceptions.

My goal in ministry has always been to tell as many people as possible these truths about Jesus Christ, who He was, who He is and what He means to us today. You are blessed, because you now know, if you didn’t before. But what about your next-door neighbor, your friends, relatives and those you’ve never met? Don’t they deserve an opportunity to hear how they can save their souls by confessing Jesus as Lord?

Of course, they do! So, on that note, please partner with me as I continue my assignment, to spread this Good News throughout the world. Some go, others send. I am committed to go through television, satellite, cable, social media and the internet. Will you be a sender? If so, please plant a love gift of $50 or more into this ministry and send me through my teachings to those who still have not had an opportunity to receive Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior.

As you celebrate Resurrection Sunday with your family, remember that it is the power of Our Heavenly Father which was manifested in your life that gives you victory over the enemy. Rejoice in that victory and live in it not just on this special day, but throughout the year.

Don’t Let Logic Alone Lead You

SCRIPTURE:

For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
(Romans 1:17)

DEVOTIONAL:

Logic is of this world; faith is of the supernatural world. As human beings, we naturally follow our own minds instead of going outside our comfort zones and accessing God’s way. But human reason and logic aren’t trustworthy. Never let what your reason tells you determine what your heart believes. Nowhere in the Bible did logic produce a miracle.

Most of the knowledge taught in our educational institutions is practical and logical. It makes sense, but human reason will always be on the opposite side of faith. God wants us to live in the supernatural realm, in the high life.

The day God calls us home to be with Him eternally will be glorious. No longer will we have to endure the natural realm (and that will be wonderful), but we don’t live passively looking ahead to heaven. No, we live actively declaring God’s will through His Word by faith. As we grow, we learn to see the world through faith. Remember, we can actually see with God’s faith—all the time. So, living in the supernatural realm is not an event. It’s a lifestyle!

PRAYER:

Dear God, I want to live the high life with You! Teach me daily to be led by Your Word, not by my own human reason. Thank you that I live actively declaring Your will through Your Word by faith. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
